SME cybersecurity advice tends to come in two flavours: enterprise checklists you can't afford, or vague reassurance you shouldn't accept. The truth is narrower and cheaper.

The controls that stop the majority of real-world SME incidents are unglamorous: multi-factor authentication everywhere, patched systems, tested backups kept offline, least-privilege accounts, and a firewall that someone actually manages. Most of that list costs discipline, not capital.

Where spending does matter — endpoint protection, email filtering, network monitoring — vendor choice matters less than configuration and follow-through. A mid-tier product that is monitored beats a premium product that isn't.

Start with an honest assessment of where you stand, fix the discipline items first, and spend money only where the assessment shows exposure. That order — not the size of the budget — is what determines whether you're defensible.
